The Java Developer's Guide to Eclipse

Whether you are using Eclipse or an Eclipse-based product, you really should know how to manage your environment. By developing Eclipse environment management skills you can feel comfortable doing the following:

• Adding and removing features
• Controlling the state of a feature (enabled/disabled)
• Sharing preferences between workspaces
• Defining your own customized default preferences
• Defining alternative configurations
• Managing a shared configuration

Chapter 6, Managing Your Eclipse Environment, discusses the control points that allow you to manage and modify your Eclipse environment and suggests best practices for common scenarios. Exercise 9, Deploying Your Product Using Features, reinforces this chapter. You also see this topic in Exercise 6, Developing Your First Plug-in, which introduces you to the basics of plug-in development and how it is related to features.
